Henry Stephenson was born on October 6, 1840 in Itawamba County,
Mississippi and spent his early years learning to farm on the family
property in both Mississippi and Alabama. On June 11, 1861, he
enlisted for service with Company A of the 11th Alabama Regiment, which
was part of the Army of Northern Virginia. He served as a
hospital steward, assisting with various field surgeries at the battles
of Manassas, Fredericksburg, Salem Church, and Gettysburg. During
this time, Henry advanced to the rank of Captain a nd was classified as
a field surgeon at the Siege of Petersburg. He was present during
Lee's surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Once he returned
to Mississippi, he became a druggist, married in 1869, and moved with
his family to Texas. His drug store operated until his death in
1913. Henry was very involved with various civic groups and was
an active member of the Masonic Lodge in Collinsville, Texas (Hiram
Lodge #433). The family continued to be merchants and operated a
general store (across from the drug store) from 1901 until
