SERVICES HELD FOR CONFEDERATE VETERAN
Funeral services were held here at 11 o'clock at the First Presbyterian Church for Burrell Christopher Hefner, Confederate veteran, who died Thursday in Dallas at the home of his daughter where he had made his home for the past 6 years.  The service was conducted by Dr. B. Wrenn Webb, pastor, with burial following at Cherry Mound Cemetery, north of Bells.
Mr. Hefner, 96 years old and before going to Dallas, resided with his son, O.A. Hefner, of near Whitewright.  He was active for one of his age until his late illness.  He learned to use a typewriter after reaching his 80th birthday, and took great pleasure in writing letters to relatives on the typewriter.  He was a blacksmith by trade and for many years operated a shop at Bells.  He farmed for a number of years in the Cherry Mound community, north of Bells, and operated a blacksmith shop in connection with his farming.
A native of North Carolina, Mr. Hefner as a youth entered the Confederate Army.  He was captured by the Union Army during the last days of the Civil War and was held a captive at Elmira, New York.
After the war he returned to North Carolina, but in 1866 came to Texas, settling in Grayson County.  He had been a resident of Grayson County ever since, with the exception of 6 years.
He attended the 1938, '39, and '40 Confederate reunions and was active among Confederate veterans.
Surviving are 3 daughters, Mrs. Nealie Worley, Mrs. Elmer Alford and Mrs. Fannie Smith, all of Dallas; 3 sons, John C. Hefner of Dallas; J.H. Hefner of Denison; and O.A. Hefner of Whitewright; 15 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
