Saturday, August 21, 1937 pg.1 ONE DEAD, ONE HURT, ACCIDENTS Bells child, son of farmer, Died Instantly from High Powered Rifle Bullet From Hands of Friend FATHER WORKING IN FIELD A seven year old child is dead ...from accidents near Denison Friday. Alvis Winifred Glidewell, 7 year old son of W.B. Glidewell, who resides on a farm six miles northwest of Bells, was instantly killed when struck in the navel by a .30-.30 rifle bullet from a gun claimed to be in the hands of a playmate about 5:30 p.m. Friday. According to a story told Justice of the Peace E.A. Wright by the father of the dead child, Alvis, a young brother, and a young girl were playing with the gun, unknown to Mr. Glidewell, as the parent and Mr. and Mrs. Shaw, housekeepers, were 200 yards distant from the house in the field picking cotton. Evidence shows that the children might have been playing with the gun and pointing it at one another when the tragedy occurred. Judge Wright said the evidence indicated the children might have been playing shooting each other when the accident happened. The bullet ranged up through the shoulder blade. His father, hearing the shot, ran to the house and examined the child, dead when he arrived. Mr. Glidewell notified authorities immediately. Mr. Glidewell said he had been using the rifle to shoot crows and a wolf marauding the neighborhood and had left it behind a radio table. Glen Cullers, a farm helper, and Joe Sanford, a neighbor, arrived at the home immediately after the tragedy.
