for Ewell D. Wainwright, 83-year-old retired Merchants and Planters
National senior vice president of Sherman, who died Saturday at Wilson
N. Jones Hospital, were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Waldo Funeral
Home Chapel.The Rev. Gerald Demarest of First Christian Church officiated and burial was in Cedarlawn Memorial Park.Mr.
Wainwright was born in Itasca, a son of William Henry and Margaret Ada
Davidson Wainwright, and was married to Virginia Douglas on November 11,
1930 in Madill, Oklahoma.He started his banking career in 1925 in
Sherman with the Central State Bank and then in 1929 went to the
Merchants and Planters National Bank and retired in 1972 as a senior
vice president.Mr. Wainwright was a former member of the
Toastmasters, Rotary Club for 28 years and served as treasurer, Sherman
Chamber of Commerce serving as a director and treasurer. He was a
charter member of the Mental Health Center which later became MHMR and
served as chairman of the board. He was a member of the Grayson County
Health Department for 19 years serving as a director and chairman of
the board.He was a member of the Andrew Randall Masonic Lodge 1342
AF and AM serving as a Worshipful Master, secretary and treasurer. He
was a member of the Dallas Scottish Rite, Grayson County Scottish Rite
Club and Hella Temple Shrine.He was a charter member of First Christian Church.Surviving are two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Sherman Democrat Denison Herald October 15, 1987 Mrs. Wainwright was born in Van Alstyne, Texas the
daughter of John McGarvey Douglas and Margaret Mae Cantrell Douglas. She died
at a local nursing home in Sherman, Texas. She
graduated from Van Alstyne High Scholl and moved to Sherman in 1926 where she
was employed as a secretary and bookkeeper at Roberts, Sanford and Taylor for 20
years. On November 11, 1930, she wed Ewell Wainwright in Madill, Oklahoma. She
was a former member of Sherman Business and Professional Women’s Club, member of
Carpenter Chapter183 order of Eastern Star and charter member of the First
Christian Church. Survivors include her husband; two grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren. Services were held at Waldo Funeral Home Chapel, the
Rev. Herbert Lynskey of the First Christian Church officiating.

was born in Sherman, Texas the son of Ewell D. Wainwright Sr. and Virginia Ann
(Douglas) Wainwright and died in a Tavernier, Florida hospital following a heart
attack while on his boat in the Florida Keys. He was a 1948 graduate of
Sherman High School and a 1952 of North Texas State with a BS degree in
business. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York
in 1965 with a Master Degree in management engineering. He was commissioned by direct
appointment in 1952 at Lackland Air Force Base (AFB) and graduated from
Officer’s Candidate School that year and was assigned to the maintenance
squadron at Byron AFB, then primary training in Georgia and all weather flying
school at Moody AFB, Georgia. He served at bases in Bryan,
Texas, Spence, Georgia, Moody, Georgia, Ladd, Alaska, Bunker Hill, Indiana,
Peterson Field, Colorado and Ent, Colorado, before being named in 1960 as
executive officer with the North American Air Defense Command-Continental Air
Defense Command. General Wainwright was aid to
the commander of the 29th Air Division, Richards-Gebauer AFB,
Missouri from 1961 to 1964, then returned to NORADCONRAD as a space and missile
analyst. He later served at MacDill AFB, Tampa, Florida, Cam Ranh Air Base,
South Vietnam, where he flew 308 F-4 combat missions in 1967 and
1968. He was promoted to Brigadier
General in 1975. He had more than 7,300 hours as a command pilot and his
military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished
Flying Cross, Air Medal with 17 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal
with on oak leaf cluster and the Purple Heart. General Wainwright retired from
the US Air Force in November 1978, with 26 years of service. On December
23, 1978, he married Sherry Smith in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was a member of
St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Colorado Springs. At the time of his death, he
was president and general manager of Long’s Furniture and Office Supply of
Miami, Florida. Survivors include his wife of
Miami; son, Larry Wainwright of Dallas, Texas; daughter Mrs. Linda Swilley,
Garland, Texas; a grandson; and his parents of Sherman. Funeral services were held at
Waldo Funeral Chapel, Sherman followed with burial at the Cedarlawn Cemetery
with full military honors conducted by Carswell AFB honor guard.
