resident, died Tuesday, December 4, 2001, at his home.
Services were held Friday, December 7 in Calvary Baptist Church in Denison. Officiating was the Rev. Greg Smith and Dr. Carol Norton. Burial was in Cedarlawn Memorial Park. Rev. Vessels was born on January 29, 1934, in Southmayd, Texas, the son of Carl Henry and Hazel Le Hughes Vessels. He married Maudie Wood on June 20, 1953 in Southmayd, Texas. He was a graduate of Southmayd Common Schools in 1952. He attended Austin College in Sherman from 1952 - 1953 and then attended Southeastern State College in Durant from 1956 - 1960, receiving a B.A. in secondary education. He returned to Austin College in 1964 - 1966 and received his M.A. in elementary education. He then attended the University of Texas, Austin in 1967 to do post-graduate work in Latin American History. He attended Grayson County College in Denison from 1971 - 1973, studying refrigeration and air conditioning technology, and in 1982, he returned to Grayson County College to receive Introduction to Computer Data Processing studies. Mr. Vessels was retired from the Pottsboro Public School System. He was a Southern Baptist pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Whitewright and his home church was Calvary Baptist Church in Denison. He was owner of Vessels Air Conditioning Service in Pottsboro. Pallbearers were Maurice (Smokey) Cate, Mack Williams, Weldon Bartley, Howard Spillman, Eddie McCartney, Lee Glidwell, James Owens and Steve Coker. Surviving are his wife, Maudie L. Vessels of Pottsboro; mother, Hazel Lee Vessels of Southmayd; daughters, Debora Vessels of Pflugerville, Texas; and Cynthia Vessels of Pottsboro; brothers, Wayne Vessels of Southmayd; and Bill Vessels of Sherman; sisters, Joe Miller of Sherman; and Sue Ransom of Southmayd; grandson, Daniel Nixon and his wife, Amber; and great-grandson, Caleb Ethan Nixon. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Vessels, in 1993. The family suggests memorials to Calvary Baptist Church, Denison; Bethel Baptist Church, Whitewright; Home Hospice of Grayson County, P.O.Box 2306, Sherman, Texas 75091-2306.
