William Charles "Bill" Traweek, formerly of Denison, went to be with his Almighty Lord and Saviour after a courageous battle with cancer on January 11, 2014.
Bill, fondly referred to as "Papa", was born in Selma, Alabama on July 30, 1928, son of Jackson Bernard Traweek and Mattie McKnight Traweek of Forrest Home, Alabama.
Papa is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia A.Traweek; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and John Little, of Denison; son and daughter-in-law, Darryl and Marta Traweek, of Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Don and Lori Traweek, of Seabrook.  He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Helen.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Sally Sellers; brother, James Traweek.
His grandchildren and great-granchildren were precious to him - Courtney Traweek Rau & husband, Stewart; Austin Traweek of Houston; Nick Traweek and wife Britainy, of Katy, Texas; Jenna Traeweek McDonald and husband, James, of Houston; Lori Little Whitley and husband, Jason, of Denison; John David Little and wife Michelle, of Colbert, Oklahoma.  He has 5 great-grandchildren, Tyler, Tana and Trinity of Denison; and Jaryn of Colbert and Liam of Katy.  He also was fortunate to have many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom he loved and cherished.
Bill graduated from Port St. Joe High School in 1948 as a 3-sport letterman in baseball, football and basketball.  He attended Vanderbilt University.  Following his college days he bravely served his country during the Korean War as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1952.
In 1954 he came to Wichita Falls for a short visit with his sister, Sally.  While there, he went to work for the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad (Katy) as a Switchman.  Shortly thereafter he met the love of his life, Patricia, on a blind date, and they remained inseparable for 54 wonderful years.  He retired from the Union Pacific Railroad (formerly Katy) in 1991 after 37 years of loyal service.
Bill was a bright and witty man who portrayed an enormous positive attitude.  He was also extremely strong in his faith.  He believed in God with all his heart and loved singing by making a joyful noise unto the Lord.  He also loved the Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys and The University of Texas Longhorns.  One of the many highlights of his life was attending 2 World Series games, where he watched his beloved Texas Rangers.  His positive attitude was congatious!  One of his favorite sayings was "If you wake up in the morning, then you have a chance."  He never met a stranger; in fact, while attending a UT/Texas A&M football game in Austin, he was asked by a Secret Service agent to step aside for the President of the United States.  In his natural way, Papa stepped in front of former President George H.W. Bush and said, "Hello! Mr. Bush!"  The two spoke for a few minutes as if they were childhood friends.  He always believed there was no such thing as quitting, and he lived that very thought to his last breath.  He always took it upon himself to make people feel better, and he never had a mean word to say.  He always had a new joke to tell; those famous "Papa-isms" will remain in our hearts and minds forever.
Bill, Uncle Bill, Dad, Papa, Pop was a great man and a tremendous influence on so many people; this world is a much sadder place without him.
Graveside services were held at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or a Youth charity of your choice.
