Established 1948 The Herald Democrat July 31, 2011 Mary Elizabeth Traweek, 81, was ushered into heaven, peacefully in her sleep, as she took the hand of Jesus at 5 a.m. at Stonebrook Assisted Living in Denison, Texas on Thursday morning, July 28, 2011. She entered this life on August 16, 1929, born to parents Leo Harold and Sarah Rachel Smith. Mary was "born again" when she accepted Jesus as her personal Savior at the age of 9 in Dorchester, Texas. She walked from her home in Corpus Christi to the Corpus Christi Bay when she was 12 years old to be baptized. Mary met and married the love of her life, Lonnie Russell Traweek Jr. on December 31, 1947. They were married for almost 60 years. He preceded her in death on October 30, 2007. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a 10 day old sister, Jeanette. She has always been a strong Christian lady, teaching us by example, with a faith and love that has left a lasting and blessed legacy to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all who know her. She has faithfully served God, attending church and Sunday School regularly, tithing, reading her Bible, praying, ministering and witnessing to others, teaching Sunday School (mostly first grade), singing in the choir, working in women's ministries, being a pastor's wife and a Parkside Pacesetter member. In recent years, Mary was a homemaker and sewed for the public "sewing in love and faith." She has held numerous jobs over the years and helped raise and care for many nephews, children, grandchildren, her in-laws, parents and anyone else who needed her. We jokingly called her house the "Traweek Hotel and Hospice." Mary also enjoyed gardening, canning, quilting and crocheting. A celebration of her Christian life was held at Parkside Baptist Church, 301 N. Lillis Lane, Denison, Texas Monday morning, August 1, with Dr. Chet Haney officiating, assisted by Rev. Steve Kretzer and Rev. Stanley Shamburger. Music was provided by Denise Bolen and Dr. Buddy Merrick. Place of burial was Cedarlawn Cemetery in Sherman. Pallbearers were Darrin Traweek, Joseph Shamburger, grandson; Jason Traweek, grandson; Tracey Traweek Jr., nephew; Jody Shires Jr., grandson-in-law; John Puckett, grandson-in-law; Hugh Rennie Traweek Jr., nephew. Mary is survived by her three children: Kenneth Ray Traweek and wife, Julia. of Denison; Mary Ann Shamburger and husband, Stanley. of Denison; and Larry Joe Traweek and wife, Theresa. of Sherman. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, John David Traweek of Lumberton, Texas; Rev. L. Russell Traweek and wife, Shelly, of Alvin, Texas; Kenneth Allyn Traweek and wife, Tina, of Port Arthur, Texas; Mindy L. Shires and husband, Rev. Jody L. Shires Jr., of Denison; SFC Joseph H. Shamburger and wife, Traci, of Trenton, Texas; Jason J. Traweek of Denison; Sarah Rose Puckett and husband, Sgt. John Puckett, of Denton, Texas; and 21 great-grandchildren. Family suggests memorials to Parkside Baptist Church, designated for Pacesetters ministry, Children's Ministry, or for the building of a new sanctuary.
