Loris Bailey Smith, 95, was born in Haskell, Texas on August 15, 1921,
daughter of Clarence Vaughn and Elwa Vashti Norton Bailey. She
passed away on July 30, 2017 at Preston Place. Noka graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas in 1939; and in 1942 she met Joseph Sanderson Smith at a USO dance at the Adolphus Hotel. Although the Army and World War II separated them, they kept in touch by correspondence; and after the war ended, they were married on January 25, 1946 in Noka's parents' home by Dr. W.A. Criswell, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Dallas. Noka and Joe spent the first 2 years of their marriage in Joe's hometown of Philadelphia before returning to Dallas. They had 2 sons, James Vaughn and Gary Joseph, and 2 daughters, Patricia Carol and Sharon Suzanne. Joe's employment with Johnson & Johnson brought the family to Sherman in 1962, where they joined the First Baptist Church. After Joe's passing and Noka's retirement from Monroe Systems, Noka became an active member of the Wilson N. Jones Hospital Auxiliary. She manned the information desk for many years and over her more than 30 years with the Auxiliary, contributed more than 19,000 hours, many of which were spent crocheting hundreds of baby caps for the babies born at the hospital. Noka is preceded in death by her beloved Joe; and her brother, Rondel M. Bailey. She is survived by her children, Jimmy Smith of Fountain Valley, California; Gary Smith and wife, Charlotte, of Orange, Texas; Patty Spears and husband, John, of Sherman; and Sharon Moon and husband, Steve, of Balch Springs, Texas; grandchildren, Christopher Smith of Dallas; Susan Moon Olive and husband, Robert, of Midlothian; Todd Moon of Balch Springs; Matthew Spears and wife, Melinda, of Sherman; and C.J. Spears of Sherman; great-grandchildren, Sara, Tyler and Brent Olive of Midlothian; and Melody Spears of Sherman; and step-great-granddaughter, Laney Murray, of Sherman. Funeral services were held Saturday morning, August 5, 2017 at Waldo Funeral Home chapel with Bro. Steve Rice officiating. She was interred next to her husband at Cedarlawn Memorial Park.
