Established 1948   Sherman Democrat July 23, 1967 "A pre-dawn fire raced through the John W. Smith home claiming five lives of a Sherman mother and four of her children. Mrs. Nancy Smith, 29, was sleeping on the first floor of the two-story frame structure looking after her 3-year-old son, David, when the fire broke out. She ran upstairs to save her four other children when all were trapped by the fire. The dead children were found huddled near an upstairs window. The mother was hanging halfway out of the bedroom window. David Smith was rescued by two Sherman police officers. Victims of the fire are Mrs. Smith and her four children, John Wesley, 10; Stephen Lesley, 8; Suzanne, 6, and Julie Kay."
