Established 1948 Doris Marie Rich Pena Careful, quiet, polite-to-a-fault, and the best bookkeeper Bear Drugs ever had, Doris was born, schooled, worked and retired in Denison, Texas. And except for the period of 1942-1949 drawn to World War II's shipbuilding industry in Oakland, California, and bearing her only child there, she chose to add to the fabric of the rail-centered town of her birth. She made up her mind to reach her 93rd birthday and added a full week to that event July 7, 1925 by passing quietly July 14 at Weslayan Scenic Nursing Home, Georgetown, Texas. And according to the nursing staff who cared for her arthritic body for the past 4 years, one who died with a beautiful smile of warmth and welcome. She lived by the Golden Rule and few others: Tell the truth, respect your elders, share what you have with friends, don't talk back to your mother, drinking alcohol is dangerous. Teasing people is the way to let them know you love them. Parents give their children the things the parents never had. Gardening feeds, heals, and makes people better. Her rotts nourished on the 1870s Markham family homestead near Sherman and extending to her small family home on Acheson Street, she was a fourth generation Texan who practiced hospitality with neighbors for more than 75 years. She joins her departed mother, Edith, and beloved adopted father, Ray, and awaits her son David's arrival, to stream through the gates of pearl with the countless hosts. Nicknames marked the communities to which she belonged. Daisy for her 46 years as employee, Bo to her aunts and uncles, Hatchet to her dad, Grandmother to Kristen and Jody. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at Trinity UMC, Denison. Burial followed at Cedarlawn Memorial Park, Sherman.
