Established 1948 Denison - Pauline Melinda Niemi, 77-year-old Denison resident, died Monday, February 14, 2000 at Texoma Medical Center. Graveside services were held Wednesday, February 16 in Cedarlawn Memorial Park with Rev. Arlie Kyzer officiating. Bratcher Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Niemi was born July 25, 1922 in Boston,Massachusetts, daughter of William and Florence McDonald Moses. She attended high school in New York City. She married Vernon Edward Niemi on July 1, 1951 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He preceded her in death on November 26, 1999. She was a member of Texoma Medical Center Women's Auxiliary, Denison Helping Hands, Grayson County Homeless Shelter and VFW Women's Auxiliary Post 2773. As a military wife, Pauline traveled the world with her husband, devoting herself to the upbringing and education of their 3 children. She was an avid reader and could frequently be found in her favorite chair by the living room window with a book in her lap. Pauline also enjoyed many kinds of handwork, including knitting, crochet, sewing and embroidery. Her family reaped the rewards of her many talents in this area in the form of beautiful handmade items. She also donated her talents for handiwork to the Texoma Medical Center Women's Auxiliary where in spite of ongoing battle with Parkinson's Disease, she reached the 5,,000-hour mark for volunteer hours in 1998. Pallbearers were Barbara Niemi-Taunton, Mark Niemi, Michael Niemi, Beth Niemi, and Tyan Niemi. Surviving are her sister, Margaret McNamara of Phoenix, Arizona; children, Barbara Taunton and husband, Stuart, of Cleveland, Ohio; Mark Niemi and wife, Beth, of Denison; and Michael Niemi and wife, Tyan, of Sherman; grandchildren, Jennifer and Michelle Mannino of Cleveland, Ohio; Tiesia Carr of Sherman; Dawn Scheller and husband, Shawn, of Bowie; Shasta Carr of Wichita Falls and Andrea Chessman of Henderson; and great-grandchildren, Coal and Araceli Castillo of Sherman. Memorials may be made to the Texoma Medical Center Women's Auxiliary or the Denison Public Library.
