McMahan 1 March 1938 - 8 March 2000 VAN ALSTYNE LEADER November 15, 1989 pg.3 McMAHAN Services for Carl Lafayette McMahan, 85, of Sherman were held Monday in Cedarlawn Memorial Park. He died Friday in Wilson N. Jones Hospital in Sherman. Mr. McMahan was born near Van Alstyne, a son of Eli Franklin McMahan and married Vivian Shaw on June 6, 1936, in Howe. He was an employee of the Lone Star Gas Co. and later taught school at Mantua, Jameson and Trenton. In 1926 Mr. McMahan was instrumental in forming the Van Alstyne Grays baseball team, for whom he played shortstop for about 10 years. He played baseball on the Humbel team in the Permian Basin League while he worked for Humble Oil Co.; and played baseball for the Texon Oilers while working for the Texon Oil Co. in the Sonora-San Angelo area. He was a foreman and welder for Todd-Houston Shipyards in Pasadena, where he built merchant marine ships during World War II. He worked for Dunigan Tool and Supply Co. in Houston, and retired from Con-Tex Oil Field Supply in 1973. After moving to Sherman, he worked for Sherman Auto Parts Store for several years and was a member of the Grayson County Golf Course. Surviving are his wife; sons, Carl N. McMahan and Ben F. McMahan of Dallas and Michael D. McMahan of Arlington; sisters, Coaette Springfield of Dallas, Marie McMahan of Van Alstyne, Bertha Light of Collinsville and Dorothy Banfield of Whitesboro; and six grandchildren. Pallbearers were Lafern O'Hanlon, Leon Calhoun, Harold Gassaway, George Cox, R.L. Smith and James Hall Jones.
