Established 1948 The Herald Democrat November 24-25, 2008 Services for Edward D. McDonald, 79, who passed away Friday, November 21, 2008 at Wilson N, Jones Medical Center, were held Tuesday afternoon, November 25 in Dannel Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Lowell Howard of the Choctaw Cowboy Church in Bells officiated. Mr. McDonald was born in Jackson County, North Carolina on September 9, 1929, son of Wade and Msy Matthews McDonald He was a hardworking young man who began working at the age of 13 to help support his family. When he turned 16, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he began his 21 year military career. Edward finished his tour of duty with the rank of Staff Sergeant and was able to travel all over the world as a member of the Army. After the service, Mr. McDonald began his second career as a butcher and was a member of the California Butcher's Union of which he was very proud, He would continue to travel after his retirement and even drove from San Jose, California to Boston, Massachusetts and back on one of his many adventures. He loved to camp and fish and enjoyed the outdoors. Towards the end of his life, he would spend time reading his Bible while listening to classical music. He also became fond of the Choctaw Cowboy Church and particularly Pastor Howard. Edward's family describes him as a true southern gentleman. Mr. McDonald was preceded in death by his wife, Sue; and his parents. He is survived by 2 daughters, Barbara Jean Jones and husband, Rob, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Patricia Dawn Beech of Bells; son, Edward Dewey McDonald, Jr. and wife, Anna Marie, of California; brothers, Earl McDonald and Ronnie Matthews; sisters, Beulah Smith of San Jose, California and Betty Waggoner of Georgia; grandchildren, Kelly Bounds; Karen Barber; Jewel Leffler; Jamie Napalitano; Jason McDonald; and Eddie McDonald; 8 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
