Grace Lorene Hughes, 97, passed away November 5, 2013.  Services were held at Farmers Branch Church of Christ, Dallas, Texas.
She was born on December 19, 1915, the 4th child of George and Grace Payne, who lived on a farm near Stratford, Oklahoma.  Her 3 siblings were brothers - Bill, Earnest, and Homer.
Grace attended the neighborhood school, grades 1-8, which was the length of school most children received at that time.  She made very good grades. Her favorite subject was Math.  Her mother was ill and bedridden for 2 or 3 years and eventually died. After 8th grade, Grace helped care for her mother and also did the lion-share of the cleaning and cooking for the family.  Picking cotton, and milking the cows early morning and evening were her least favorite chores.
After having had 2 dates, Grace, at age 21, moved to Los Angeles, California and married George Woodrow Hughes.  Their marriage date was August 25, 1937.  At that time Woody was working for the telephone company.  Four years later, July 9, 1941, their first child, David Woodrow Hughes, was born.  Twenty-four months later, August 21, 1943 their second and last child, James Paul Hughes, was born.  They built their first home in Van Nuys, California, where Grace planted a half acre of berries, which she sold to people in the area, even to some movie stars.
Woody for some years had been preaching in the little towns around Los Angeles and eventually planted churches in 3 area communities.  In all Wood and Grace began 6 different churches.  They initiated 3 other church plants, 2 in Beaverton and in Tigard, Oregon and one in Grand Forks, North Dakota.  Woody passed away July 11, 2002 after having had Alzheimer's disease for 9 years.
At the age of 91 Grace met and married Malcolm Blanton, who was also 91.  Movie clips from their wedding were on 2 different Dallas television news programs.  Grace and Malcolm were married 3-1/2 years. The first 2 were wonderful and very romantic, the last year was more difficult because of Malcolm's Alzheimer's.
Grade was a widow again by the end of 2010. She lived in the independent living area of Christian Care Center in Mesquite for 2 years, after which she spent the remainder of her days living with her sons and their families. In 2012 Grace began to have mini strokes, each one taking away some of her health.  She lived a fairly normal life until 3 weeks ago.  When falls and strokes necessitated moving her to a June Weismer residential care facility and bringing in Compass Hospice for around the clock care.  Grace died November 5, 2013.
Grace leaves behind 2 sons - David and Jim; 6 grandchildren - Shawn Hughes, Darren Hughes, Crystal Duran, Amy Sturgeon, Brian Hughes, and Brent Hughes; and 15 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for contributions to go to Compass Hospice, Dallas, Texas.  Please make check "in memory of Grace Hughes."
