Established 1948 E. Willette "Bettye" King Harris was born August 23, 1922 in Van Alstyne, Texas. She was the youngest of 11 children; 5 of whom were already married. They were a musical family and had lots of fun singing together with one brother playing the guitar and a sister on the piano. Everyone pitched in to do the household chores except the younger two. Willette was the last surviving child of W.N. and Lettie Sledge Blankenship. Billye graduated from Sherman High School. She worked at school, Kress's and then was a soda fountain girl at the drug store. She received a letter from Safeway saying they were hiring girls making good money. She was all for that and she got the job. One day while crossing the courthouse square, after working all day and going to classes at business school, a young man suddenly appeared and asked if he could carry her books. She reluctantly agreed as she had met him before and he was obnoxious - she didn't like him. The next time she saw him, he was in uniform and quite a different person. He asked Willette if she would have a cup of coffee with him, to which she agreed. They talked until about 10 o'clock that evening. His name was Douglas King, and they were wed several months later. They were married for 12 years when Doug fell ill and passed away. Billye stayed a widow for 6 years and then she met "Mr. Wonderful", Matt Harris. After 23 years of marriage Billye lost Matt and was a widow again. Billye belonged to Beta Sigma Phi. She loved her sorority sisters and other friends in Dallas. Later she fell in love with oil painting. She did some lovely paintings, giving them away to friends and family. Eventually she was president of The Marble Falls Art Guild. Wonderful memories were made at the Lakehouse in Marble Falls with her sorority sisters. Funer services were held Monday afternoon, March 15, 2021. Burial followed at Cedarlawn Memorial Park, Sherman. Billye's church membership was with Second Baptist Church in Garland. - - - Waldo Funeral Home Cedarlawn Cemetery Susan Hawkins © 2024 If you find any of Grayson County TXGenWeb links inoperable, please send me a message. |
