Funeral services for Staff Sergeant Jesse M. Hughes, 29, hero of two wars and son of Mr. and Mrs. S.M. Hughes, who was killed over the Sea of Japan were held Sunday at the Waldo Funeral Chapel.
A native of Tom Bean, where he was born September 24, 1920, Staff Sergeant Hughes had made his home at Spokane, Washington before going overseas.  He was educated in Sherman public school.  On June 1, 1941 he married Miss Juanell Grafft at Durant, Oklahoma.  He was a member of the Baptist Church.
At the time of his deaht, Staff Sergeant Hughes was engineer on a B-29 enroute to a bombing mission over Korea from an American air base in Japan.  Before reaching the target, however, engine trouble developed and the plane exploded over the Sea of Japan.  Six crew members were killed; five survived.  Hughes' body was recovered October 9.
Staff Sergeant Hughes entered the service with the Air Force in 1942.  He was decorated for gallantry and valor in 1944 by the Soviet government.  He made 33 combat missions over Europe in World War II, as a top turret gunner.  He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross air medal with four oak clusters, four Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter; his parents; and 3 sisters.
