Sherman - Raythalia T. Hunt, a long-time resident of Sherman, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital-WNJ in Sherman.  She was 73.
Her funeral was at Greater New Hope Baptist Church in Sherman.
She attended schools in Marshall, graduated from Pemberton High School and later attended Wiley College where she met her husband.  Born on August 4, 1937 in Marhsall, Raythalia met and married Edward Hunt on January 20, 1958.  From this union 4 children were born.
After moving to Sherman, she worked as a machine operator at Johnson & Johnson for nearly 15 years and began studying at Grayson County Community College.  Raythalia later received her undergraduate teaching degree in elementary education from East Texas State University.  She subsequently continued her education at the same school where she received her M.Ed in education.
Because of her love for children, Raythalia elected to teach kindergarten (and a few years of 1st grade) within the Sherman Independent School District, first starting at Fairview Elementary and later teaching many years at and retiring from Jefferson Elementary School.  Raythalia was a staunch advocate of children's education and sought to the needs of her community.  She saw the children's environment and family as an extension of themselves and often time provided nurturing beyond the call of duty by supplying gentle-used clothing, nutritional snacks and lots of love in order to help children grow academically and emotionally.
A believer in God's word, Raythalia was united with Christ at an early age at Piney Grove Baptist Church in Marshall.  She later became a member of Greater New Hope Baptist Church in Sherman.  She loved family, cooking, quilting, watching sports and had a wonderful smile in her voice that could light up your day.  For many years she enjoyed supporting her husband as a coach of the Sherman Bearcats and she attended many football games and other Sherman sporting events.
She is survived by her dedicated husband of 53 years, Coach Edward Hunt, Sr. of Sherman; 2 sons, Charles H. Hunt and wife, Phoebe, of Waco; and Edward Hunt, Jr. and wife, Yolanda, of Tampa, Florida; and 2 daughters, Phyllis R. Bennette and husband, Mahfouz Direya, of McKinney; and Andria L. Hunt of Dallas; 2 grandsons, Jacoby A. Hunt and Edward P. Hunt, III, both of Sherman; and one granddaughter, Elicia Taylor-Hawkins of Houston; 4 sisters, Doris Rowl, Yedobaty Brock, Gwendolyn Davis and Clara Meek, all of Houston, of whom she fondly thought and loved grealy; and 3 very special sisters-in-law, Lavena Hunt and Eva Mae Hunt, both of Longview; and Lois Meek from Katy.  Raythalia leaves behind a host of wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends who she cherished.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Omri Rossar Meek and Clara Ethel Gray Meek; 2 brothers, Edward Johnson Meek and Omri Meek; and 4 sisters, Bobbie Landor, Deloris Fields, Zelma Patterson and Eureka Upchurch.
Arrangements were entrusted to Cravens Funeral Home.  Her remains were interred at Cedarlawn Memorial Park in Sherman.
