Denison - Maxine Bishop Houghton was born January 13, 1919 in Davenport, Iowa, daughter of Jack and Gertrude Sheppard and died at her home in Denison on January 11, 2009, surrounded by her loved ones.
She attended school in Tampa,  Florida, and during World War II she woprked with the USO.
She married Hoyt Bishop in 1942 and they established Big Chief Waste Paper Company in Sherman and Denions; and later Hoyt's Fabrics in Denison.  Seven years after Hoyt's death in 1970, she married Rev. John Houghton of Whitesboro.
She was a member and tireless worker of the Church of Jesus Christ where she played piano for many years and received an Achievement Award for her contributions. She was a friend and mento to young and old alike.  She rouched many lived and was loved by all.
Maxine was an artist. She played the piano, crocheted and made quilts by hand.  She enjoyed travel, photography and drawing.  She had a ceramics shop, Busy B. Ceramics, in Denison where she painted many pieces of fine porcelain.
She is survived by her daughters: Gaines Bishop of Denison; and Donna Griffin of the Virgin Islands; brother, Joe Sheppard and wife, LaVelle, of Tampa, Florida; grandchildren: Ron Henderson and wi fe, Tami, of Las Vegas; Tina Levesque and husband, Jim, of Spokane, Washington; Chris Gaines and wife, Beth, of Stafford, Virginia; Albert Garner of Tyler; Sonya Secrest and husband,  Eddy, of Tyler; Deniss Westdyke of Anna; and Cindy Griffin of South Carolina; 6 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by  her parents; husbands, Hoyt Bishop and John Houghton; and daughter, Irene Jenkins.
Services were held Wednesday afternoon, January 14, 2009 at Bratcher Funeral Home Chapel, with Elders Billy Asbil and Eddy Beem officiating. Burial followed at Cedarlawn Memoiral Park.
Pallbearers were Albert Garner, Jonah Saxon, Billy Asbil, Eddy Secrest, Mike Down and James Conner.
Arrangements were under the direction of Bratcher Funeral Home.
