Established 1948 Zettie B. Hightower 1904 - 1996 Melvin C. Hightower 1900 - 1975 Gary Bernard Hightower, 88, of Howe, Texas, passed away on April 19, 2023. Gary was born February 2, 1935, son of Melvin C. Hightower and Zettie B. Tomlinson Hightower in Savoy, Texas. After graduating from Sherman High School in 1953, Gary spent most of his career with Piggly Wiggly corporation, retiring in 1997. Gary married the love of his life, Betty Ruth Farrer in 1956 in Gunter, Texas "at the preacher's house." Gary and Betty went on to have 2 children, Mark Hightower and Brenda Hightower Reynolds; 2 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Melvin C. Hightower, Jr. Gary is survived by his wife and his 2 sisters, Betty Nabors and Annette Sides. Graveside services were held Monday morning, April 24, 2023 at Cedarlawn Memorial Cemetery in Sherman, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association. Betty Ruth Hightower of Howe, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2023. Betty was born August 5, 1940, daughter of Edward Farrer and Ruth Cook Farrer in Dorchester, Texas. She grew up in Gunter, Texas where she worked on her parents' farm and picked cotton as a child. Betty later worked for Texas Instruments in Sherman, Texas, where she retired after 25 years of working on the assembly line, making parts for the military. After her retirement from Texas Instruments, Betty worked part-time for 15 years at Sam's Club in Sherman, Texas. Betty married the love of her life, Gary Hightower, in 1956 in Gunter, Texas "at the preacher's house." Gary and Betty have 2 children, Mark Hightower and Brenda Hightower Reynolds; 2 grandchildren, Savannah and Brittany; and 6 great-grandchildren: Braydon, Erica, Mya, Ashton, Riley and Aubrey. Betty, aka "Meme" loved her family and friends. She was a very kind and generous person who always put others' needs before her own. Betty enjoyed giving gifts, reading, working in the garden, and baking cakes and cookies for friends and family. Betty is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her sister, Glenda Farrer. Graveside services were held Friday morning, October 6 at Cedarlawn Memorial Park in Sherman, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association.
