Established 1948 Johnny "John" Lee Grimes, 83, of Pottsboro, Texas passed away at his home peacefully on January 29, 2022. Mr. Grimes was born February 9, 1938 in Laurel, Maryland, son of John and Marcelina Grimes. Johnny was an avid athlete who was drafted by the Saint Louis Browns at the age of 19, who would later become the Baltimore Orioles. In lieu of following his dreams to the major leagues, Johnny chose to join the military and serve our country from 1956-1959. While on leave Johnny met the love of his life, Vivian Ann Peterson and they were married on January 12, 1957 in Savage, Maryland. It was a long, loving marriage of 54 years, which blessed them with 6 children, until Vivian's umtimely passing in 2010. Johnny continued to serve in the Naval Reserve from 1959-1962. He would go to work for Andy Korrith, Oscar Mayer, and Hitchcock before joining the Denison Independent School District as Head of Transportation and Maintenance for 26 years until he retired in 2000. Johnny would never lose his love for baseball though and continued to be a pillar of the community, coaching youth sports for 20+ years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who cherished his family and baseball like no other. Survivors include his brother, Bill Grimes and wife, Virginia, of Laurel, Maryland. Four children, son, Wayne Grimes and wife, Doris, of Denison; daughter, LouAnn Nelms of Sherman; daughter, Sheila Lewis and husband, Paul, of Pottsboro; and son, Jerry Grimes and wife, Lori, of Denison. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Johnny is preceded in death by his loving wife; parents; sons, Johnny Lee Grimes, Jr. and Joey Grimes. Funeral services for Mr. Grimes were held Wednesday afternoon, February 2, 2022 at Fisher Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Raymond England officiating. Interment followed in Cedarlawn Memorial Park, Sherman. Mrs. Grimes was born July 28, 1941 in Elkridge, Maryland, daughter of Harry and Lula May Gillis Peterson. Vivian married the love of her life, Johnny Lee Grimes, on January 12, 1957 in Savage, Maryland. She loved the Lord and was a member of Trinity Lighthouse Church. Vivian was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Mrs. Grimes is survived by her husband of 53 years; sons, Wayne Grimes and wife, Doris; and Jerry Grimes and wife, Lori, all of Denison; daughters, LouAnn Nelms and husband, John, of Denison and Sheila Lewis and husband, Paul, of Garland; granddaughters: Danielle Ham, Kelsey Holmes and Heather Morris; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Billie Isom and husband, Gene, of Luella; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sons, Johnny Lee Grimes, Jr . and Joey Grimes; parents; brother, Noah Peterson. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, October 12, 2010, Fisher Funeral Home with Rev. Raymond England officiat ing. Interment followed at Cedarlawn Memorial Park in Sherman. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Johnny Sampson, Keaton Sampson, Dustin Grimes, Bradley Grimes, Jeremy Grimes, Jerrod Grimes, and Justin Grimes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to the donors' charity of choice. Arrangements were under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home, Denison.
