Irvin Greenway, 73 year-old retired carpenter and cabinet maker, loving
husband, father and grandfather, went to be with the Lord peacefully Sunday
morning, June 15, 2008 at the Homestead of Sherman with his loving family
at his side.
Services were held Wednesday morning, June 18, 2008 in the Waldo Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. James Crawford of Cornerstone Baptist Church and Rev. Duane Peters officiated and the burial followed at Cedarlawn Memorial Park. An honor guard from the U.S. Naval Honor guard Burial Detail conducted military graveside honors. James was born March 28, 1935 in Alzheimer, Arkansas, son of James Willie Greenway and Anna Belle Miller Greenway. He had to leave school at a young age to help support the family and was employed by Coca Cola Bottling Company in Arkansas as a young man. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserves and the U.S. Army Reserves during the 1950s and married Lillie Ruth Hudson on July 5, 1955 in Abilene, Texas. James worked as a carpenter for Geis Construction in Abilene before moving to Sherman in the 1960s. He was a self-employed carpenter and cabinet maker and owned his business, "The Cabinet Shop", out of the shop at his home. He also did remodeling and cabinet work for local doctors in their homes and offices and helped build the Sherman Nursing Center. James was a lifetime member of the Sherman AmVets and had been a member of the American Legion. He loved to work in his garden, planting food items, or growing flowers until his health began to fail. He loved cats and enjoyed caring for all cats who came by his home. He enjoyed reading the newspaper and collecting recipes, which he gave to his family in hopes they would cook him a special meal. He especially loved spending time with wife, children and grandchildren. He is survived by 4 children, Ruthie Cook and husband, Nolan; Tammie Benedict and husband, Roger; James Lee Greenway, Sr.; and Michael Greenway and wife, Stacey, all of Sherman; brothers and sisters, Joyce Bell of Watauga, Texas; Harvey Greenway and wife, Gail, of Sunset, Texas; Louise Nichols and husband, Nick, of Ft. Worth; and June Brewington and husband, Jack, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 7 grandchildren, Teresa Drain and husband, Jared; Niki Cook; Gregory Dodson; April Barrera and husband, Roberto; Jennifer Greenway and husbandm Ellis Pham; J. J. Greenway and Codey Greenway; 4 step-grandchildren, Ronney Benedict, Tony Benedict, Rhonda Benedict and Amanda Benedict. Also survived by 14 great-grandchildren, and 2 great- great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Ruth Greenway in August of 2004; his parents; sister, Helen Faulk; and great-granddaughter, Chastina Dodson. Pallbearers were Niki Cook, Greg Dodson, J. J. Greenway, Codey Greenway, Ronney Benedict and Tony Benedict. Honorary pallbearers were Roberto Barrera, Jared Drain, Ellis Pham and Dallas Geis. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Meals on Wheels, Texoma Cancer Center or Heart to Heart Hospice, 1500 Water Ridge Dr., Ste 100, Lewisville, Texas 75057.
