She was a member of West Sherman Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Retired Teacher's Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, AARP and NARFE. She is survived by her granddaughter, Emily A. George and her mother, Marie George of Lincoln, Rhode Island; nieces, Dianne Hammonds and Marilyn Brewster, both of Sherman; Sandra Wolfe of McKinney; and Pamela Curry of Denison; also three nephews, Cannon George II and Cannon George III of Howe, Texas.... The Herald Democrat February 13, 2002 Sherman - Services for Leonard L. George of Sherman, 89-year-old retired civil service employee who died Monday, February 11, 2002 at Wilson N. Jones Medical Center, were held Wednesday, February 13 in Waldo Funeral chapel. Rev. Danny Wood of West Sherman Baptist Church officiated and burial followed at Cedarlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Waldo Funeral Home. Leonard was born on March 15, 1912, in the Farmington community, son of Porter H. George and Beulah Clayton George. He graduated from Howe High School in 1930 and farmed the George family land in Howe for several years. He married Jane Maxine Brodhead on August 24, 1906 in Sherman and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from August 1943 to December 1945. Mr. George began a 20-year career in civil service when he became the Howe Postmaster from 1950 until 1952. He worked at the VA Hospital in McKinney from 1954 to 1956, and then was employed at Perrin Air Force base from 1956 until 1971. After retiring from civil service, he was the building superintendent at Sherman's First Baptist Church from 1971 to 1978. His final retirement was May 30, 1978. He was a member of West Sherman Baptist Church, a Lifetime Member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, a member of AARP, and was honored as a 50-year member of the Howe Masonice Lodge No. 430. He is survived by his wife of Sherman; granddaughter, Emily A. George of Lincoln, Rhode Island; nieces, Sandra Wolf of McKinney; Pamela Curry of Denison; Dianne Hammonds and Marilyn Brewster, both of Sherman; also two nephews, Cannon George II and Cannon George III of Howe. He was preceded in death by his son, Ronald Len George on February 9, 1990. Pallbearers were Ven Hammonds, Don Brewster, Eric Hammonds, Gene Word, Cannon George III and Max Bryant. The family requests memorials be given to the Building Fund at West Sherman Baptist Church, 1830 W. Washington, Sherman, Texas 75092 or the donor's charity of choice.
