for Arlie Cordell of 503 N. Andrews, 89 year old retired farmer who
died Thursday in a Sherman nursing home, were held Saturday
morning in Waldo Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Fred Hall of Central
Christian Church officiated with burial in Cedarlawn Memorial Park. Mr. Cordell was born in Dorchester, son of Robert and Mary Lankford Cordell; he married Nellie Helms. He was a farmer for many years in the Sherman area, was a veteran of World War I, and a member of Central Christian Church. Surviving are sons, Terry Cordell and Robert Cordell, both of Sherman; Sonny Cordell of Gunter; and Pete Cordell of Whitesboro; daughters Almeda Elliott and Norma Jean Steele, both of Sherman; Juanita Mathena of Fort Collins, Colorado; and Lorene Johnson of Big Spring; 19 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Arlie was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Patsy L. Schneider and Elouise Spencer; and wife, Nellie Helms Cordell Pallbearers were grandsons. Services were held Monday afternoon in the Dannel and Horton Funeral Home Chapel for Mrs. Nellie Inez Cordell, 78, of 1925 Princess Drive who died late Saturday in a Sherman hospital. Rev. Gary Reynolds of First Christian Church officiated and burial was in Cederlawn Memorial Park. Born in Lypan, Texas, she was the daughter of George Erskin and Alice Hunter Helms. She attended Grayson County schools and was married to Arlie Cordell on February 16, 1917 at Sherman. She had been a resident of Sherman 15 years, having moved here from Whitewright. She was a member of First Christian Church. She is survived by her husband; sons, Robert Cordell and Terry Cordell, both of Sherman; L.C. Cordell of Whitesboro; and Herbert Cordell of Gunter; daughters, Norma Jean Steele and Almeda Elliott, both of Sherman; Juanita Mathena of Fort Collins, Colorado; and Lorene Johnson of Denison; brother, Victor Helms of Decatur; sister, Mrs. Tom Scrivner of Sherman; 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Grandsons were pallbearers. Nellie was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Mrs. Patsy L. Schneider and Elouise Spencer.
