The Sunday Gazetteer Sunday, March 3, 1912 pg. 4 DEATH OF A PIONEER Thomas McCarthy died at Kansas City, Mo., Feb 22 after a short illness of pneumonia. Mr. McCarthy was 76 years of age. He was born in Ireland, but came to America early in life and was among the first to cast his lot in Denison. He and his brother Owen embarked in the hardware business here early in 1873. They purchased the lots on the corner now occupied by Madden's dry goods store, on which they erected a frame building, and where they conducted a thriving business many years. The old frame was destroyed by fire along about 1880-3, and a brick structure took its place. Thomas McCarthy was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in the 56th Illinois infantry, and was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. He is survived by the wife and three children, Mrs. C.W. Goodwin of McKinney, Mr. Harry McCarthy and Miss Frances McCarthy of Dallas. Mrs. McCarthy, wife of deceased, resides in Ft. Worth. The remains were brought to Denison for burial. The funeral took place Saturday afternoon at the Shield's undertaking parlors, conducted by Father Donohoe of St. Patrick's Church. The relatives were all present, and a goodly number of the few pioneers who are left. The writer formed the acquaintance of the decedent on his arrival in Denison and the acquaintance grew into lasting friendship, which was mutual. He was genial and good natured and a friend that could be depended upon. He will be greatly missed especially by the old-timers, who had known him so long.
