Dallas Morning News 5 July 1949 One of Last Denison Pioneers, Godfrey Nevada Baker, Dies Special to The News Denison, Texas, July 4 - Funeral services were held Monday for one of the few remaining pioneers of this North Texas city, Godfrey Nevada Baker, 85, who died Saturday after an illness of six months. Born in a covered wagon in Nevada in 1864, Baker got his middle name from his birth state. His family had started west in a belated quest for gold but wound up as wheat ranchers in California. After a few years in California, the family returned to their home state of Missouri, then came to Grayson county in 1875, settling on a farm northwest of Denison. At 18, Baker tired of farm life and came to the "big city" of Denison to take a job at a wagon yard. He turned soon to the up and coming Katy Railroad and worked 40 years in the car department before retiring in 1927. He married Miss Ida E. Carlat in 1886. She died in 1938. Since his retirement from the railroad, Baker had been looking after his extensive real estate holdings in and around Denison. He was active until about six months ago. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Milt Hauser, Denison; a son, Frank Baker, Wichita Falls; a brother, C.C. Baker, Denison; two sisters, Mrs. A. Williams, Wheeler; and Mrs. Bennie Bazzell, Shawnee, Okla.; and several grandchildren.
