The Death Roll
Mr. James J. Campbell, an old and much respected citizen of this city, died Tuesday noon, of hemorrhage of the lungs.  Mr. Campbell had benn down town in the morning, and had been conversing with several friends, apparently in his usual health.  On returning home in company with Mr. Sam Hanna, and when near his own house, he commenced to cough violently, and became suffocated with an effusion of blood, falling to the earth almost in front of his own door.  Mr. Hanna, assisted by others who witnessed the occurrence, carried the unfortunate gentleman into his residence, and in a short time Dr. Feild was in attendance, but human aid or skill was of no avail, and at 12:30 o'clock he passed away.
Mr. Campbell first came to Denison in 1872, being a railroad contractor on the M.K.&T.  After locating in Denison he embarked in the saloon business, but not being a drinking man, and finding that this business was distasteful to him, he sold out and prosecuted his old avocation of railroad contractor, visiting Arkansas and Colorado, and helping to build roads in those states.  Eventually he undertook the construction of the Denison street railway, and on Mr. Walterhouse becoming proprietor, he was chosen superintendent of the line, which position he filled till the time of his death, with credit to himself, and to the evident satisfaction of his employe, and the citizens of Denison.
Mr. Campbell came originally from St. Joe, Missouri, and away back in the sixties was a companion of our Col. McDougall in the mines of Colorado.  He was a bosom friend of Mr. Joe Euper, and was known to all as a straight-forward and conscientious man, and a worthy citizen.
Mr. Campbell was a victim of consumption, and for the last two years has been in delicate health, but none of his friends anticipated such an early death.  He was fifty years of age, and leaves a sorrowing wife, who has the genuine sympathy of the community at large.
The funeral occurred Thursday morning from St. Patrick's Church.  Father Logue san the requim mass, and was assisted by Father Flynn, who at its conclusion gave a short but eloquent sermon, that will long be remembered by his listeners.  Over eighty carriages followed the remains to Calvary Cemetery where the interment was made.
