The Sunday Gazetteer Sunday, January 7, 1900 Page 4 LOCAL CONDENSATIONS Laura Adell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Smart, died Monday. The deceased was a very pretty and interesting girl of about twelve years. Her death caused the most profound sorrow as everyone loved her. The funeral is to take place tomorrow from the Catholic church and the interment at the Calvary cemetery. The Sunday Gazetteer Sunday, January 14, 1900 pg. 1 One of the saddest and most affecting funerals ever witnessed in our city was the Angel Mass said for little Laura Smart. Twenty-two of her little friends and classmates dressed in uniform, six with tall stems of lillies, ten with lighted candles and the remaining six pall bearers with wreaths of flowers and white doves preceded by her seat mate carrying a bannder of the Sacred Heart slowly marched from the Sacristy down the center aisle and met the remains at the inner door of the church. The pall bearers took their places on either side of the casket, and while the chorus of children sang "Holy Angels," gently rolled to the altar rail, placing amid lighted candles and decorations of pure white all that mortal of their school mate and friend. Standing on either side of the casket were the lily bearers kneeling at the foot, while Father Crowley recited the burial services. So impressive and sad was this simple ceremony that not one of those who witnessed it could remain unmoved to sorrow and sympathy for those bereft. After the services the pall bearers again escorted the casket to the door of the church, while the chorus sang, "Jerusalem, My Happy Home." At the cemetery the pall bearers stood on either side of the open grave till after the last absolution was given, then placed their flowers, emblems of purity and innosence, on the holy mound. Mr. and Mrs. Smart have the sympathy of the entire community in this hour of affliction. Little Laura was their oldest daughter and a bright, lovable child.
