John A. McKenna died 8 August 1901 The Sunday Gazetteer Sunday, August 11, 1901 pg. 4 JOHN A. McKENNA DEAD John A. McKenna, secretary of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, died suddenly at his room in the Lebrecht block Thursday afternoon at 4:50 from the bursting of a blood vessel. Mr. McKenna had been complaining for two or three weeks, but his friends as well as himself did not consider his ailment anything sersiou, and he was up and working around only a few minutes before he was stricken. A Negro nurse was the only one present and he immediately called Conductor Eckard from an adjoining room, and a doctor was summoned, but when he arrived life was extinct. The funeral will be under the auspices of the local lodge of Hibernians at 10 o'clock a.m. today (Saturday); services at St. Patrick's church. Mr. John A. McKenna was born in Charlotte town, Prince Edward's Island, and was about fifty years of age. He was educated, we are informed in Montreal, Canada, for a priest, but circumstances led him into other pursuits. He had traveled a great deal, was a close observer, a studious reader, and possessed a very retentive memory. There was scarcely any subject the he could not converse upon entertainingly and it was a pleasure to listen to his description of places and scenes he had visited. He was a perfect gentleman, rather retiring in disposition, and only his more intimate friends knew his history or were aware of his intellectual endowments. He had resided in Denison since 1883, and was in the employ of the Finn Bros. at the time of his death. There are two sisters of the deceased living at Tignish, Prince Edward's Island, and they were notified Friday by telegraph by Mr. Ed Ford of the death of their brother.
