Dr. Joseph Alfred Lewis Wolfe Dr.
Joseph Alfred Lewis Wolfe, better known as Dr. Joe, was born March 23,
1888 in Elkton, Virginia. He obtained his medical education at the
University College of Medicine in Richmond, Virginia in 1912. In
1916 Dr. Wolfe did post-graduate work in New York City. (The Van

At the age of 29, he filed a registration as a medical doctor in Grayson County on June 5, 1917, stating that he lived and practiced in Van Alstyne, Grayson Co., Texas as an assistant to Dr. S.W. Moore. His uncle, Judge J.A.L. Wolfe verified and signed his registration form. Dr. Wolfe answered the call of his country during World War I and served his country in France in the medical corps and was promoted to Captain. Shortly
after his return from military duty, Dr. Wolfe moved his practice to
Sherman, associating himself with the firm of Gunby, Hoard,
McElhannon & Spangler. The hospital which he was a staff
physician of was St. Vincent's Sanitarium in Sherman.
Just eight years after moving to Sherman, Dr. Wolfe died on August 10, 1927 from heart disease at the age of 39. He is buried at West Hill Cemetery. 1919 DR. JOE WOLFE LOCATES HERE Dr. Joe Wolfe of Van Alstyne, a nephew of Judge J.A.L. Wolfe of this city, has associated himself in practice with the firm of Gunby, Hoard, McElhannon & Spangler of Sherman. Dr. Wolfe has been associated with Dr. Moore at Van Alstyne and recently was discharged from the military service, in which he served with the medical corps overseas. Dr. Wolfe is a splendid young man and already has many friends in Sherman who extend to him a most hearty welcome to Sherman. The Democrat bespeaks for Dr. Wolfe its sincerest wishes for success in this city. Dr. Davis Spangler, who recently returned from service in France and who is now stationed at Marlin, writes that he expects to receive his discharge some time after June 15, after which he will return to Sherman to resume his practice with the above firm.
