Dr. Thomas Theodore McKinney, M.D.

Dr. McKinney, born in Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas enjoys the largest practice of any colored physician in the city, and is a [1895] graduate of the Meharry Medical College of Nashville, Tennessee.  He practiced medicine in his native of Grayson County for 30 years.  He endeavors in every way to conduct his business according to the highest ethics of the profession.

Archibald and Jane Black McKinney and their three oldest children moved to Texas from Alabama at the end of the Civil War.  The couple had 6 more children while residing in Grayson County.



In November 1896 Dr. McKinney married Carrie Lillian Whitcomb in Grayson County, Texas.  Four years later the couple was living on 13th Street in Fort Worth, Texas along with the one twin daughter that had survived their births in 1899.

McKinney and his drug store are deserving of special notice, because of his standing, the practice he enjoys, and the popularity of his drug store. The premises are fitted up in a first-class manner with attractive show cases, wall cabinets and prescription department. Prescriptions are here compounded with accuracy. The general stock includes a full line of drugs, toilet articles, perfumes and sundries. 

The 1910 census shows that Thomas Theodore McKinney was born in 1869 in Texas the child of parents born in Tennessee. His race was listed as Mulatto.  Dr. McKinney and his family were living on West Bond in Ward 2 of Denison Texas along with his wife, Carrie F. McKinney, age 33; one daughter, Ethel L., age 11; and two sons, John W., age 7 and Archie W., age 3.

In 1913 - 1915 Dr. McKinney shared an office at 209-1/2 West Woodard in Denison with H.W.S. Cook (physician) and W.E. Foster (dentist).

The 1920 census indicates that a third son was born to them around 1913; the family continues to maintain their home at 1330 West Bond in Denison.

The September 5, 1925 issue of The Chicago Defender mentions that Dr. McKinney, of Denison, was in Chicago for several weeks to receive medical treatment. He was also appointed the supreme physician of the American Woodmen in 1925, moving the same year to Denver, Colorado. A January 30, 1932 issue of the same newspaper notes that Dr. McKinney was appointed to the staff of the highly acclaimed Denver General Hospital.  
 
In the early fall of 1935 Dr. McKinney visited friends and relatives in Ft. Worth, Sherman and Denison before returning to his work in Denver, Colorado.

Dr. McKinney wrote many articles for newspapers.  Dr. McKinney's two books were All White America : a candid discussion of race mixture and race prejudice in the United States was published in 1937, and Sparks From the Medical World.   He was a member of the Military Surgeons Association, the Medical Reserve Officers Association, the American Public Health Association, and a staff member of the Denver General Hospital staff.

Dr. McKinney died in 1945 and Carrie in 1960.   Both are buried in Fairmount Cemetery, Denver, Denver County, Colorado.
