Dr. Joseph A. Mayes Dr. Joseph Allen "Joe" Mayes (1877–1951) was born in McKinney, Collin County, Texas, to Adolphus Barbee Mayes (1844–1919) and Calpurnia Ann "Pernie" Allen (1844–1921), the third of their five children. One of Joe Mayes’s brothers was Edgar Ernest Mayes (1870–?) of McKinney and later of Frisco, Texas. He grew up in McKinney and married Miss Willie Warden. She was named after her father, Sheriff Williams Warden, and her brother was Todd Warden, a noted Texas and Oklahoma peace officer. Other siblings of Dr. Mayes were Coke Mayes of Austin, Mrs. J. C. Greer of McKinney, and Alva Mayes Hartsfield of Dallas. At the age of 20 Joe Mayes was an employee in Largent Bros.' book store on the square in McKinney. April 3, 1899 Manley Beard entered the store and seriously wounded Mr. Mayes. The case was reported to be "one of the most noted" in the history of Collin County. The Democrat

He readily gave the bond this morning and also another one, $500, for attempting to shoot Ed Largent, and was released. The following gentlemen are his bondsmen: S. Fitzhugh, A.J. Chin, John C. Cooke, S.P. Coffey, J.L. Gibson, J.H. Graves, L.S. Coffman, H.E. Morgan and T.E. Shirley. Manley
Beard was convicted twice of assault with intent to murder and
sentenced to two years in prison each time. However, the
conviction was reversed both times, and he was acquitted on a third
trial.
Dr. Joe Mayes did recover from his wound, went to medical school and was a pioneer in the medical profession in Denison, now such a bulwark of the local economy. He studied at Trinity University, received his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1904, and interned at Shreveport, Louisiana. Then he settled in Denison. Dr. Mayes was a leading member of Denison Aerie #85, Fraternal Order of Eagles. In
the fall of 1907, Dr. Joe married Louise West.
daughter of J.G. "Top" and Kate Kirk West. At the time she
married, Louise had not seen her father since she was a young girl.
