13 June 1919 BERRY PICKER DIES AFTER BEING BITTEN BY RATTLER (Special to The News) Sherman, Texas, June 12 - While picking berries in a patch at his home near Hagerman, in the northwest part of Grayson County, about 6 o'clock yesterday afternoon, L.D. Sweeney, a farmer, was bitten on the hand by a large rattlesnake. Four hours later he was dead. He is survived by his wife and three children. The Courier Gazette Saturday, June 14, 1919 FARMER DIES FROM RATTLESNAKE BIT L.D. Sweeney, a farmer residing in the Hagerman community died at his home there about 10 o'clock last evening from the effects of a rattle snake bit, which he sustained about 6 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Mr. Sweeney was picking berries in a patch when he was bitten on the hand by the rattler, according to information received here. He did not see the snake but heard it after it had bitten him.
