Thursday, July 19, 1956 pg. 5 Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Wallace attended the funeral of Mrs. Effie Bennett Hestand at Howe Wednesday. Mrs. Hestand was a cousin of Mrs. Wallace. Glyn D. Hestand 3 February 1922 - 16 February 2018 wed 17 June 1939 Herald Democrat November 29, 2009 HOWE - Glyn David Hestand, 90, of Howe passed away on Friday Nov. 27, 2009 at Mullican Care Center in Savoy. Family visitation will be at Waldo Funeral Home Sunday Nov. 29 from 2 - 4 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Howe Monday Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. Glyn was born on Nov. 4, 1919 in Luella, the son of John B. and Effie (Bennett) Hestand. Glyn attended school at Luella, and graduated from Howe High School in 1937. He married his sweetheart and lifelong companion, Mary Lillian Swaney, of the Celtic Community on June 17, 1939. They had celebrated their 70th anniversary this year. Glyn grew up in the Luella Community and was a farmer during the Great Depression and World War II. Later he moved to Howe, and became a building contractor and built many of the homes in Grayson County and the City of Howe. After retiring in 1976 he and his wife enjoyed traveling all over the Southern U.S. Glyn enjoyed fishing, playing dominoes and spending time with his family. Also, he and his wife were members of the Grayson County Sesquicentennial Committee and as an author he contributed to the books, "The Hestands, then and now" and also wrote stories for "The Texas Millennium Book, The Way Things Used To Be" sponsored by Austin College. Glyn was a member and deacon of the Luella Baptist Church for many years and his pride and joy was contracting their new church building several years ago. Glyn and Mary served in the Christian Music Ministry by singing on "The Old Country Preacher" radio show. He also served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, youth minister, and song leader at the Howe First Baptist Church. He and his wife were also were members of the XYZ Club. Mr. Hestand was also active in politics serving as a city council member and Mayor of Howe for some time. Glyn also volunteered as a voting registrar at the local polls on election day in Howe. Glyn was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Lucille, Velma and Eva Belle. He is survived by his wife, Mary; sons, David and wife, Shelly of Ogden, Utah and Jerry and wife, Tammy of Dorchester. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Mary Lillian Swaney was born February 3, 1922 in the small community of Celtic, between Howe and Tom Bean, the only child of Howard F. Swaney and Bessie Hopper Swaney. She passed from this life on Friday, February 16, 2018 at Mullican Care Center in Savoy, Texas at the age of 96. Mary attended Celtic schools until they consolidated with Howe and Tom Bean in 1936 and would then attend Howe schools. She married her sweetheart and lifelong companion, Glyn David Hestand of Luella, on June 27, 1939. He preceded her in death on November 27, 2009. They were married 70 years and loved spending time together and traveling. She was employed at Pools Manufacturing for many years and later worked for Texas Instruments, retiring in 1980. Mary was a member of the First Baptist Church of Howe. She was Primary Superintendent for 25 years, choir member, assistant Sunday School teacher for the Hannah class and worker in the nursery. She loved tending her "Little Lambs". While attending the Luella Church, she worked with young people and was involved in the music ministry. Mary loved singing, laughing and had a great sense of humor. She is survived by her sons, David Hestand and wife, Shelly, of Ogden, Utah and Jerry Hestand and wife, Tammy, of Howe; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service was held Wednesday, February 22, 2018 at Waldo Funeral Home chapel in Sherman with Pastor Bobby Hawkins officiating.
