Howe - Henry Cannon George, Jr. was called home to be with his Lord and Savior, Thursday, June 5. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, June 9 in the First Baptist Church of Howe. His life-long friend, Minister Ronnie Corzine of San Antonio, will officiate. A private family burial will follow at Akers Cemetery. Mr. George passed
away in his sleep at Texoma Healthcare at the age of 72.
Cannon was born on July 7, 1935 in Sherman, Texas to the late Henry Cannon George, Sr. and Florence Kathryn (Johnson) George. He graduated as valedictorian of the Howe High School class of 1953. Cannon developed a strong work ethic early in life, maintaining a paper route at age 12, delivering the Dallas paper by bicycle. He began stocking groceries at age 13 for Mack's Grocery in Howe and later worked part time there for many years as a butcher. In 1955, he began employment at Perrin Air Force base in Denison in the Personnel Department and remained there until the base closed in 1971. Following the base closing, he went to work at the Howe Post Office for several years as a mail carrier. Before retirement, he was the accountant for Catching Farm Supply in Howe.
Cannon married Mary Belden on March 9, 1957 in Durant, Oklahoma and they celebrated 50 years of marriage this past year. Cannon had a tremendous love for animals, enjoyed cooking, being outdoors and spending long days fishing. He was a voracious reader and loved writing letters to family and friends. He was a devout Christian who loved the Lord and a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Howe.
Mr. George is survived by his wife Mary of Howe; one son, Henry "Hank" George, III of Howe; one daughter, Mindy Kathryn Sloan and husband Troy of Howe; four grandchildren, Dylan and Sam Sloan of Howe and Katie and Derek George of Howe; cousins Sandra Wolfe of McKinney, Pam Curry of Denison, Margie Dussing and Howard Hestand Jr. both of Sherman; and two loving canine companions, Mattie and Lucky. He was preceded in death by his parents, aunt and uncle, Maxine and Leonard George and cousin Sarah Graham.
Cannon dearly loved his wife and children and will be terribly missed by them. They rejoice in knowing he is in God's gracious presence. The family wants to express their appreciation for the exceptional care, love, and friendship provided to him the past few years by Karen Kennedy, Sheri Berden, and Dr. J. Michael Benson.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 Sunday at Waldo Funeral Home. 


Mary Margaret Belden George was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, December 12th. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, December 17th at the First Baptist Church of Howe. Pastor Roger Tidwell will officiate with services under the direction of Waldo Funeral Home. A private family burial will follow at Akers Cemetery. Mrs. George passed away surrounded by family at The Houston House at the age of 76.
Mary was born on December 2, 1938, in Dorchester, Texas to the late Mabel Hefley Belden and Edwin Belden. She attended school in Dorchester through 8th grade, transferring to Sherman High School through 10th grade, then to Howe High School where she graduated in 1957. She married Henry Cannon George Jr. on March 9, 1957 in Durant, Oklahoma and celebrated 51 years of marriage together. Mary was employed with Johnson & Johnson in Sherman for 36 years, retiring in 1999. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Howe.
Mrs. George is survived by her daughter, Mindy Sloan of Austin; son, Henry "Hank" George, III of Howe; four grandchildren, Dylan Sloan of Brisbane, Australia, Sam Sloan of Waco, Katie Franks and husband, Jon of Denison and Derek George of Dallas; sisters Norma Kopp, Sharon Rogers, Susan Bruce, Barbara Jones, Vickie Medders, and brother, Johnny Belden. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Cannon George Jr., sister Sandra Fawcett and brother Tim Belden.
Mary dearly loved her family, friends and church. She was an active member in her church, served as an officer in XYZ, and volunteered for years with Meals on Wheels and looked forward to her weekly visits with both those she served with and to. She had a special love of basketball, playing Varsity for 4 years in high school, then continuing to faithfully support the Varsity girl's team in Howe. The family wants to express their appreciation for the truly exceptional care, love, and friendship the last month provided by her sister and brother in law, Sharon and Jimmy Rogers, sister in law, Shirley Belden, lifelong family friend Kevin Stephens, Teresa Mclain of the Houston House Care Center, and her wonderful Sunday School class and church family. A special thank you to Coach Derek Lands and the Varsity girls' basketball teams for their continuted acknowledgement of Mary's attendance and support throughout the years.
The family will receive friends at 1:00pm Wednesday prior to the service in the fellowship hall at the First Baptist Church of Howe. They rejoice in knowing Mary was quickly was ushered into God's gracious presence.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations to The Houston House Care Center, 826 W. Houston, Sherman, Texas or Home Hospice of Grayson County to help them in providing exceptional care and support for others who may follow in Mary's path.
