Durant Daily Democrat online posted August 31, 2016 viewed September 5, 2016 Carpenter's Bluff Bridge to Stay New bridge going up beside it. by Dan Pennington Carpenter's Bluff Bridge in southern Bryan County is the gateway to Texas at Grayson County. The 106 year old bridge is to some just a highway they drive but to others it holds a lifetime of memories. Currently the one lane was previously the railroad side that had concrete laid over it after the railroad ceased to use the bridge. The other side was originally for human traffic, from horse-drawn wagons to automobiles. Unfortunately the wooden cross beams are rotten. Since there is only one lane open to traffic today, people have to make sure the bridge is clear before attempting to drive across it. Replacement of the steel structure is in progress. However, the two counties touched by the bridge, Bryan Co., Oklahoma, and Grayson Co., Texas, are spending $6 million to build a completely new bridge just west of that old Carpenter's Bluff Bridge near Kemp, Oklahoma and will have several lanes for traffic, which should be ready for traffic use in 2017.. The historical location will remain open to foot traffic. Waterways Susan Hawkins © 2024 If you find any of Grayson CountyTXGenWeb links inoperable, please send me a message. |
