Preston Road The
Republic of Texas was established in 1836. About 1840, The
Republic of Texas established a fort of Texas Rangers near Col. Holland
Coffee's Trading Post which was under the command of William Preston.
This ranger post was named Fort Preston and the great curve
of the Red River became known as Preston Bend. It was here
that the settlement of the small town of Preston began.
A road was opened south to Elm Fork on the Trinity River. The road was simply a cleared trail. The contract for the construction of the road required that tree stumps were to not exceed the height of twelve inches. The road became the famed Preston Road which became a main artery of travel for settlers and their covered wagons forged across the ford at Preston bend, heading south. Travelers can follow parts of the original route of the Shawnee Trail around Dorchester, Texas. “Photo Courtesy of Dickinson Cattle Co.” The Denison Guide: Complied and written by the Federal Writer's Project of the Works progress Administration in the State of Texas Denison Chamber of Commerce, Cooperating Sponsor; Published by the Denison Chamber of Commerce, Denison, Texas 1939,pg10 Preston Road History Trails & Roads Copyright © 2024, TXGenWeb.
