October 15, 1879 pg. 4 A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT A Drunken Man Under the Car Wheels and Loses a Leg The News of Tuesday morning made brief mention of an accident, whereby one Joe Reason, while in a state of intoxication, was run over by a train of cars and his left leg nearly severed. The victim of the unfortunate accident, Joe Reason, is an Englishman by birth and his addicted to his cups. He has been in Denison about a fortnight in the employ of Mr. F.C.J. Lebermann. On circus day Joe laid in an extra stock of that mysterious compound known as whisky. In a state of intoxication, he wandered down to the Union depot where he met with the terrible accident which will leave him a cripple for life. Joe sat down on the platform with his feet on the rail. The yardmen were engaged at the time switching the H. & T.C. passenger coaches which compose the train which connects with M.K.&T. train No. 3 from the north. Joe was probably asleep, and unconscious of the impending calamity which awaited him. The wheels of a coach attached to the switch engine ran over Joe's left leg crushing it in a terrible manner between the ankle and the knee. Dr. Feild, the H. & T.C. surgeon, was immediately summoned to care for the unfortunate man and he was removed to the residence of Mrs. Sheppard on Crawford street where the injured limb was amputated above the knee by Dr. Feild, assisted by Drs. White, Jones and Nagle. Reason now lies in a very precarious condition. He is a man of very delicate constitution and his recovery is extremely doubtful.
