Sunday, April 30, 1911 pg. 2 ENGINEER T.Z. WILLIAMS AND FIREMAN PEARSON KILLED At Alvarado the Katy Flyer Bashes Into a Freight Train - Engine Turns Over and Kills Both Men One of the saddest accidents recently in railway circles was the death of Engineer T.Z. Williams and Fireman Pearson of the Katy, which occurred Sunday night at Alvarado. The stories are a little conflicting, but the facts are about as follows: A freight train had pulled into the siding to allow the Flyer to pass. About six cars had failed to clear the main track, the siding not being of sufficient length to admit the full train. It is state that the freight train had put out a flag to stop the Flyer until the main track was cleared, and Engineer Williams failed to see the signal, shut off steam, but not in sufficient time to avert the collision. The Flyer engine when it struck the freight train was derailed and turned over, and Engineer Williams was killed and Fireman Pearson caught under the wreck and met the same fate. The body of the fireman was not extricated for several hours. Engineer Williams had been in the service of the Katy a number of years and was one of its most trusted employees. He was not only esteemed in railroad circles but was liked by everyone who had the pleasure of his acquaintance, in fact Denison never had a more enterprising citizen. He has built no less than a dozen fine homes just east of the H. & T.C. track on Heron street and Fannin avenue. If he made any money it was immedately invested in such a manner as to push Denison to the front. Denison can ill-afford to lose him. He was an honor to his profession; moral upright and just to all. He was at the time of death comparatively a young man. His death while universally deplored, will be felt more keenly by his widowed wife and fatherless children. To them the Gazetteer extends heartfelt sympathy. Fireman Pearson leaves a wife and several children. He had been in service of the Katy for several years.
