"Interesting Happenings Recalled in Area Paper"
May 3, 1891" A Curious Graveyard Denison - Denison has a most peculiar graveyard. In fact, it is probable that not another cemetery of the kind is to be found in the state. The burial ground is a small (piece) of land lying north and immediately adjoining the Missouri, Kansas and Texas freight depot, and is used for the interment of hands, legs, fingers and such other parts of human beings as are mashed or mutilated by the cars in such a manner as necessitates amputation. In the MK&T yards in this city and among its hundreds of miles of track north, south, and west of the city accidents are frequently occurring, and a large number of those injured are forwarded here for medical and surgical treatment. The freight building is used for such purposes, and the vacant lot north of the platform is used as a depository for amputated substance. Two weeks ago the legs of little Johnny Wells were interred in this peculiar graveyard, and this morning the right foot of E.R. McCain found a grave at the same place." With the Katy, or MK&T Employees' hospital located in Denison this is no doubt where most of these injured persons were treated. The hospital that was at Tone and Washington for many years was torn down several years ago to make way for an addition to the then Texoma Medical Center.
