The Denison and Southeaster R.R.
At present an adjunct of the M. K. & T. is another of Denison's institutions. Although an infant at present, we look upon it with a Parent's eye and expect the next few years to work wonderful changes. The road is built to Whitewright, twenty-one miles southeast, crossing the Trans-Continental at Belleplain, thirteen miles from Denison. At the same time Denison was asked to contribute to the building of this road, real estate transactions were nominal; vacant houses were many; renters scarce; and not a single improvement in progress. Our people responded liberally to the demand of the projection of this road and in an incredible short time raised the donations asked for, $10,000. The road was commenced; real estate went up; houses arose on every side like magic; businesses revived; emigrants came pouring in, followed by capital and new enterprises.
This road has for its objective point, Mineola, at which place it connects with the Texas and Pacific and Tyler Taps of the I. & G.N. Eighty miles remains to be built to make the connection. In the meantime the Sabine Pass and Northwestern R.R. is expected to make a junction with the D. & S.E., at or near Kaufman. When this junction is made it gives Denison two ocean outlets - toward the Atlantic and without drawing on the imagination, but dealing with facts, we will chronicle an outlet to the Pacific soon.
