White Steamer Sherman Democrat August 13, 1939 Among the early motorists of Sherman were E.C. Smith, a jeweler, and Jess Stanfield who owned a White Steamer. Bright Fielder, now a resident of Dallas, later owned a car similar to the one in the illustration. Motor fashions included long veils and gauntlets. Large elderly women frequently had to be pushed through the small doors which were at the back of the cars. Collisions were infrequent but accidents not unusual. One year the old Settlers picnic was almost wrecked when a car got out of control and several early machines ran right off the ferry at Preston Bend and were buried in the sand of the river.
