MAXWELL AUTOMOBILE Sherman Courier
Thursday, May 24, 1917 Yesterday afternoon two representatives of the Courier were invited to attend a demonstration of what the Maxwell cars would do on one gallon of gasoline on the ordinary roads of Grayson County. The cars were to be equipped each with just one gallon and run until the gallon was exhausted. The lineup was made at the front of the Courier office and the front also of the Sherman Auto and Implement Co., the first handling the Maxwell cars of Sherman. There were six cars, and the others occupied by guest and members of the above firm, as well as special representatives of the Maxwell Co. The gasoline was purchased from the International Rubber Sales Co., East Houston Street, and the start was made at 3:15. Car No. 1 was owned by H. H. Reed, Conductor on the Frisco, and the car No. 2 was owned by Horace L. Reynolds, 508 N. Maple. The route chosen was in Whitesboro road and there to Tioga, beyond which place two miles ended the run. Car No. 2 crossed 25 bridges and made 44 short curves. Between 15 and 20 hills were climbed, of from 15 to 30 percent grade and some rough roads were encountered. Car No. 1 surpassed this record. Car No. 2 went dead in Tioga, after a run of 34 miles on one gallon. Car No. 1 passed through Tioga and made 36 3/10 miles, the last two miles being over rough road and in wet sand. One hill a mile long was pulled in intermediate gear. This is believed to be a record run in this country for one gallon of gasoline with over 650 pounds of human freight, and only the ordinary run of roads. The trip was a most pleasant one, enjoyed by all who participated. Transportation Copyright © 2024, TXGenWeb. If you find any of Grayson County TXGenWeb links inoperable, please send me a message. |
