Thursday, January 27, 1944 pg. 1 BAG OF SUGAR BRINGS $5,000 At the war bond auction at the Palace theatre Wednesday night a 10-lb. bag of sugar brought $5,000.00 and a 5-lb bag brought $2,000.00; a sack of flour $2,000.00, a gallon of paint, $500.00 and a 30-day pass to the Palace theatre $1,000.00. This is the way the war bond sale went for several minutes. Many small articles brought from $100 to $500 and when the sale closed $18,075.00 worth of bonds had been sold. The sale sponsored by Marshall Hasty, manager of the theatre, assisted by other members of the committee. The auctioneers were Col. C.J. Meador and Col. E.T. Hubble, both of whom proved to be excellent auctioneers. The attendance was small on account of the weather, but the sales proved to be satisfactory and the bidding was lively from start to finish. Sales of bonds at First National Bank and the post office up to Wednesday night were $18,335.00. This added to the sales at the auction brings the total sales up to $36,410.00, which leaves a balance of $61,590.00 to be sold before Whitewright reaches her quota of $98,000.00 This means there is lots of work to be done before our quota is reached. Those who have not purchased bonds should do so at once. Get busy and buy them today.
