Friday, October 23, 1914 pg. 2 WILLIAMS THEATRE DAMAGED BY FIRE A few minutes before eleven o'clock last Thursday night a passenger alighting from the northbound Katy train discovered that the Scenic motion picture theatre was on fire and set up a yell that brought the fire department to the scene, also a number of the city's inhabitants who heard the alarm. The blaze originated in the rear of the building, and before it could be brought under control, did damage to the picture show equipment to the estimated extent of $1800 or $2000. The building which belongs to W.F. Haden of Ladonia, was also considerably damaged, the loss being fully covered by insurance. Mr. Williams was carrying a policy of $1000 on contents. The picture projecting machine, which occupied a booth at the front of the building, was only slightly damaged, and the proprietors made immediate arrangements Friday to reopen the show Friday night in the Truett building. It is Mr. Williams' intention to remodel his former stand and equip it with opera chairs and other comfortable and inviting furniture. Smoke and heat from the fire did some damage to the costly fountain and drug fixtures in Kirkpatrick and Bryant's drug store. J.F. Lilley's dry goods store was also endangered, but the good work of the fire company saved the adjoining property. The Whitewright Sun Friday, November 6, 1914 pg. 5 The Scenic Theatre building recently damaged by fire is being repaired. The work is being done by carpenters from Ladonia, where the owner of the building resides. Mr. Williams advises us that he expects to reopen his show in the building when the work of remodeling is completed, which will be in about two weeks. The Whitewright Sun Friday, November 13, 1914 pg. 2 The Scenic Theatre began a new motion picture serial, "The Trey O'Hearts," Monday night and admitted the public free to the first installment. The playhouse was filled with people who accepted the courtesies of the show managers. The motion picture theatres of this city have been giving their patrons the best obtainable in motion picturedom. The Odeon's enterprise put it in a class with Dallas, Waco and other large cities on the "Million Dollar Mystery." The Odeon was showing the 17th installment of that popular serial while Dallas was showing the 14th episode and while Waco was showing the 19th episode - and while Van Alstyne is showing the first episode.
