Thursday, September 27, 1956 pg. 3 DOWN MEMORY LANE 35 Years Ago (From The Sun, September 23, 1921) The home of Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Vestal, southeast of town, was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Oscar Pierce entertained her neighbors with a tacky party last Thursday evening. The American Legion Band will give a concert on Main street Friday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gosnell, south of town, announce the birth of a daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cowart announce the birth of a son on the 18th. R.S. Morehead, Ott Lackey, P.C. Delfel, W.H. Green, Will Looney and M. Bishop attended an I.O.O.F. meeting at Leonard Tuesday. Bishop Alexander of Wolfe City has accepted a position with Woosley hardware store here. 30 Years Ago (From The Sun, September 23, 1926) J.W. Nicholson died at his home on South Bond street Monday morning. Appearing on the Parent-Teacher Association program were Mrs. J.W. Wilson, Alwilda Ryon, Miss Susie Noe, Mrs. Annette Harp, B.W. Crain, Miss Tommie Chenoweth, Mrs. Guy Hamilton, and Miss Dorothy Chambless. R.D. Ford of Dorchester has made arrangements to open a chicken hatchery here. The 7th grade Good English Club has elected the following officers: Velma Bennett, president Beatrice Maynord, vice-president Eva Jane Skaggs, secretary-treasurer Margaret Pierce, reporter Mrs. J.C. Gillespie was killed in an automobile accident at Desert Tuesday morning. Following is the faculty for the Whitewright schools: F.W. Smith, superintendent B.W. Crain, high school principal Miss Dorothy Porter, Miss Dorothy Chambless, Miss Roberta Sloan, Miss Mac Reed, Miss Joel Bulliner Miss Susie Noe, grammar school principal Miss Clara Craig, Miss Frances Giles, Miss Pine Murphy, Miss Ruth Montgomery, Miss Sallye Hamilton, Miss Mae Hall, Miss Kate Fulton, and Miss Gertrude Schooling. 25 Years Ago (From The Sun, September 24, 1931) Up to Wednesday night 2,430 bales of cotton had been ginned here. Mr. Vaden Bush and Miss Eveline Donihoo were married at Durant, Oklahoma, Saturday. The Preston Everheart Post, American Legion elected the following officers at the meeting Tuesday evening: Joe Riddle, commander George Burnham, vice commander B.W. Newman, adjutant Percy Darwin, chaplain Robert Sears, liaison officer Roy Blanton, service officer Arthur Badgett, publicity officer W.J. Barbee has leased the Bryant brick building and will move his insurance office there in a few days. 20 Years Ago (From The Sun, September 24, 1936) Mr. and Mrs. H.P. Boss announce the birth of a son on September 30. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Climer announce the birth of a daughter on September 18. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lumpkins are the parents of a daughter, born last Friday. S.T. Montgomery, Jr. of Whitewright is a halfback on the East Texas State Teachers College football team. Russell McGinnis is working on a government project at Fate. Twenty Pilot Grove high school students have transferred to the high school here.
