Pierce, son of John Pierce, southwest of town, arrived home Friday, having been discharged from the Army. J.D. Yates has purchased lots 10, 11 and 12 in block 27, from W.H. King. Cyrus Wellington, a Whitewright boy who was wounded in France, is now back at Camp Travis. George German is at home from Camp Sheridan, Alabama, having been discharged from the Army. Dee German, D.L. Ford and some of their neighbors hauled out a large quantity of cinders last Saturday to repair a bog hole on the county road south of T.H. Sears', which had become almost impassable. Steele Cantrell, who has served 6 years in the regulary Army, arrived home Saturday. 30 Years Ago (From The Sun, January 31, 1924) B. Legg and family moved to Denison first of the week. Miss Ray Russell received painful injuries Sunday night in an automobile accident about a mile south of town. C.A. Fox of Paris has purchased the Henry Williams dairy. Lovell Wrenn, son of J.T. Wrenn, east of town, was among those listed on the honor roll for the fall term at Wesley College, Greenville. Running true to form, the high school basketball team crowned itself with glory by fighting and winning the Interscholastic League district championship by defeating Tom Bean 23 to 4 Friday in the play-off game. Appearing on the 11th grade honor roll were Beatrice Bennett, Joe Weldon Carr, Harold Key, Margaret McMurry and Grace Vestal. Ernest Lilley, Mrs. J.F. Lilley and Miss Monta Badgett will leave Sunday for St. Louis to buy spring stock for the J.F. Lilley dry good store. J.C. Gillespie will also go to purchase spring stock for Hudson, Davis & Co. store. 25 Years Ago (From The Sun, January 31, 1919) Miss Birdie Yates, 30, who died at her home near Ladonia, was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery Monday afternoon. It is announced that the State Highway Commission has appropriated $34,000.00 for grading and graveling the Whitewright-Orangeville and Trenton road. Elaborate plans have been made for the formal opening and dedication of the new power plant and electric appliance store of the Texas, Louisiana Power Co. here, which will be held on Saturday, February 2. Mary Lee Andrews, Virginia Benson, Euna Lee Hampton, Mildred Holcomb, Babe Nell Penn, Mardell Pumphrey and Guy Yowell were on the 11th grade honor roll. Patsy Ann Fogle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Fogle, died Sunday afternoon. 20 Years Ago (From The Sun, February 1, 1934) Up to January 16 there had been 50,456 bales of cotton ginned in Grayson county. During the weekend the Tigers took two basketball games from Van Alstyne by scores of 28-24 and 23-19. The freshman flag "ain't no more." It disappeared during the weekend. - - - Reflector Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Phillips announce the birth of a daughter on Friday, January 26. J.L. (Brownie) McSpedden has moved his battery shop to the old Roberts garage building. At a business meeting of the Esther Class of the Presbyterian Church last Sunday Miss Ruth Cox was elected president; Mrs. Allen T. Short, vice president; Mrs. B.B. Hall, secretary; and Mrs. Robert Howard, reporter. Mrs. R.L. Sears is teacher of the class.
