The Whitewright Sun Thursday, April 22, 1954 pg. 7 35 Years Ago (From The Sun, April 18, 1919) Canaan was visited by hundreds of people Sunday to view the damage done there by the cyclone Wednesday morning of last week. It was estimated that in the neighborhood of 2,000 cars traveled over the road between Bells and Whitewright. Lois Lively of El Paso has accepted a position in the T.H. Lively dry goods store. Mrs. Tom May died last Thursday afternoon and Mr. May died Tuesday morning. Both were injured in the cyclone last week. Mr. and Mrs. Grover Gillett entertained with a dinner last Saturday, honoring Miss Ruth Southerland of Dallas and Hubart Baughton of Eagle Grove, Iowa. W.H. Horton, who lost his home in the cyclone last week, has moved his family to the Binkley residence here. W.A. Hamilton was elected city marshall in last Tuesday's election. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Adkins and five children, who received slight injuries in the storm last week, are at the home of her father, W.D. Lane, in east Whitewright. 30 Years Ago (From The Sun, April 17, 1924) Dee Hood, 35, well-known farmer of the community northeast of town, died at his home Sunday. A big crowd is expected for Whitewright's Third Monday trades day. W.L. White and Mark Montgomery attended the State Ginners' Convention at Dallas last week. C.W. Hampton, Ott Lackey and Floyd Badgett spent Monday in Van Alstyne taking in the sights and mixing with the jockies, second Monday being Van Alstyne's trades day. Rev. J.F. Fender, Rev. W.A. Kirkpatrick, Mr. and Mrs. T.H. Sears, Mrs. Robert P. Sears and Miss Ethel Gordon attended a meeting of the Paris Presbytery at Paris last week. Miss Susie Noe is attending the district convention of the P.T.A. at Waxahachie. Gillett Grain Company advertised cracked wheat for small chick, 100 lbs., $2.25; whole wheat, 100 lbs., $2.00 and ground wheat for cow feed, 100 lbs., $2.25. 25 Years Ago (From The Sun, April 18, 1929) At a meeting of the Parent-Teacher Association at the grammar school Tuesday evening the following officers were elected: Mrs. C.J. Meador, president Miss Susie Noe, 1st vice-president Mrs. H.T. Arterberry, 2nd vice-president Mrs. Paul Roberts, corresponding secretary Miss Sallye Hamilton, treasurer Miss Margaret Lauderdale, parliamentarian Tom Graves has purchased a 98-acre farm, located five miles northeast of Whitewright, from F.F. Cantrell. 907,911 automobiles and 133,180 trucks were registered in Texas this year. Mr. and Mrs. R.S. Wolverton, northeast of town, announce the birth of a daughter Tuesday. Grafton Montgomery, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.H. Montgomery of Whitewright and Miss Rita Butts of Tom Bean were married Saturday at Houston. S.H. Montgomery, chairman of the Rotary Club program Friday, had as guest speaker Rev. J.W. Willbanks, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Savage is in charge of the Whitewright Ford dealers agency which has been opened here by a Denison company. Rains are delaying cotton planting in this area. A Children's Church, enrolling 21 children six to 12 years old, was organized Sunday by Mrs. Bertha D. Minor. W.N. Johnson, 66, died in a Sherman hospital Thursday. Mark Montgomery has announced his candidacy for public weigher of precinct 3. Members of the Ida 4-H Club, which met Wednesday afternoon at the Ida school, are Beulah Faye Smith, Lou Bell Burk, Faye Burk, Mary Lea Chaney, Evelyn Savage, Susia Clay, Anna Mae Barrett, Ona Mae Dishner and Margaret LaRock.
