17 YEARS AGO IN WHITEWRIGHT

Annual report of the Whitewright Commercial Club shows total receipts of $6,276.65 and disbursements of $6,228.75.
The Democratic precinct convention, held Saturday, elected the following delegates to the county convention: W.T. Truett, C.H. Lewis, W.H. Horton, W.T. Browning, J.M. McMillin, J.T. Roberts, R.L. Holcomb, and F.E. Alverson.
Grayson County voted 3,151 for and 2,220 against submission of a State prohibition amendment in Saturday's election.  The Whitewright vote was 157 for and 44 against submission.  The vote for the Robertson insurance law was 2,960 for and against, 1,297, in the county.
Miss Sue Stephens left last week for a vacation trip to Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
F.M. Echols has returned from Wichita Falls where he attended a convention of the Woodmen of the World.
Mr. and Mrs. Looney Robbins announce the birth of a girl this week.
Misses Emma and Genevieve Davidson entertained from 2 till 5 Saturday afternoon in honor of their cousin, Miss Emma Jane Biggers of Wewoka, Oklahoma.
Miss Gertrude Holland entertained Friday morning, honoring her guest, Miss Imogene Board of Waco.
R.L. Hayter has sold his interest in the Dixon & Hayter furniture business to J.G. McKinsey and M.M. Sears who with Mr. Dixon now comprise the firm.

R.R. Davis, well known painter and paperhanger, died here suddenly last Thursday.
W.B. Hestand is remodeling his home in southwest Whitewright.
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Everheart on July 23.
Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Gillett announce the birth of a daughter on July 23.
Paul Roberts has traded for the Birge-Forbes gin plant here and announces that he will soon begin overhauling the machinery  preparatory to operation.
R.W. Crockett, a baker of this place, has filed a voluntary petition of bankruptcy in the U.S. district court at Sherman.
J.R. Jordan has purchased the Mrs. Harve Truett residence on West Main street.
The Sun publishes a comparative statement of bank deposits in Van Alstyne and Whitewright, showing that Van Alstyne banks had $358,045.52 on deposit while the Whitewright banks had deposits totaling $747,956.12.

From The Sun, July 29, 1926

Garnett Nichols, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Nichols of Ida, died at a Sherman hospital Wednesday.
A residence owned by J.B. Dickson and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. George Gattis was damaged by fire Thursday afternoon.
W.H. Horton was re-elected precinct chairman at the Democratic precinct convention held here Saturday afternoon.  The following delegates were elected to the county convention: D.S. McMillin, B.S. Montgomery, F.E. Douglas, W.H. Horton, and J.H. Waggoner.
Mr. and Mrs. Lester Caylor are the proud parents of a 9-pound son; born July 28.
J.C. Gillespie left today for New York where he will spend 2 weeks purchasing merchandise for the Hudson & Davis Company store.
Gomer May has purchased the Grover Gillett residence on West Spruce street and will occupy it as a home.  Mr. and Mrs. Gillett will move to the Holland residence.
Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Hamilton moved to Greenville this week, where Mr. Hamilton will be commission agent for Magnolia Petroleum Co.
S.H. Badgett died at his home here on July 19.
C.S. Smith, residing east of town, has been taking treatment for prevention of rabies, following the death from this disease of a horse owned and handled by him.
Roscoe Pace has returned to Whitewright, having closed the theatre which he has been operating at Clarksville.
