17 YEARS AGO IN WHITEWRIGHT
(From The Sun, June 16, 1916)

Dr. E.P. Montgomery was instantly killed at 9:30 Saturday morning when the car he was driving was struck by a Katy freight train.
The Sun is publishing a daily newspaper this week in cooperation with the Commercial Club, which is observing Prosperity Week.
Perry O'Neil of Dallas, engineer in charge of the construction of a sewerage system here, arrived Thursday to lay out the work.
On last Friday afternoon Mrs. W.P. Vaughn and Mrs. Claud Phillips entertained in honor of Mrs. Earl Johnson of Roxton.
H. Brodhead, manager of the Whitewright Electric Company, inaugurated a 24-hour current service on June 1, which will be continued through the summer months.
Thurston Montgomery left Friday for Plainview to look over some opportunities for investment.
The Odd Fellows have elected the following officers for the ensuing term of six months:

B.F. Gafford, treasurer
S.H. Montgomery, secretary
W.T. Noe, Tyler

Misses Cecil Doss and Ermine Webster are attending the Grayson County summer normal at Austin College.
Dr. J.N. Powell was in the Randolph community the other day and was told that John Watson, a farmer near that place, had plowed up a  human skeleton.  Dr. Powell verified the report by bringing back with him a part of the skull.
Julian Montgomery has been appointed assistant city engineer of Austin.
Helms Bros. have completed the gravel road through the city and as far north as Canaan.
Grady May of Whitewright is a member of the first graduating class of Southern Methodist University, Dallas.
The Whitewright Mill & Elevator Co. has moved and set up a large warehouse to increase storage facilities for the new grain crop.  The Beatrice Mill has under construction the largest warehouse in this part of the country.

Dorothy, the 4-year-old daughter of Mrs. H.M. Ryon, was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when she fell beneath the wheels of the family automobile as Mrs. Ryon was backing it out of the garage.
T.H. Lively of Whitewright was seriously injured in an automobile accident near Dallas Wednesday night.
Supt. H.L. Durham has been notified the the local high school has been granted further credits of affiliation by the State Department of Education, bringing the total number of credits to 20-1/2.
W.B. Hestand has purchased the W.O. Brents bankrupt stock of groceries, and had purchased considerable advertising space in this paper to tell the people about it.
Miss Mary Davis left for Austin Monday to enter summer school at the University of Texas.
Lt. Roger F. Davis, R.O.T.C. of A. & M. College, left Sunday for Camp Knox, Kentucky, for six weeks of military training.
The average price of wheat in the United States during April was $1.23, the average price of corn was 60c, and the average price of oats was 36.8c.
P.M. Jarvis exhibited some boll weevils here this week, and said that the pests are so numerous as to threaten destruction of the cotton crop.
