Home of Dr. R. May Destroyed by Fire
The beautiful home of Dr. R. May on West Main Street was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon shortly after 3 o'clock.  The fire originated in the attic and was under good headway when discovered.  Shortly after the noon hour a fire was started in the bathroom stove, and it is believed that the flue was cracked by the high wind Sunday, allowing a spark to get into the attic and set the house afire.
The fire department was on the scene soon after the alarm was given and the fire boys worked hard and faithfully to save the building.  The residence was two stories, with an attice.  The fire having originated near the roof, the fire fighters were at a disadvantage, as it was hard to get to the blaze.  However, they held the blaze down and kept it from spreading to adjoining property.
Dr. May had $5,000 insurance on the building and $1,500 on his household goods.  He cancelled a $3,000 policy on the building the first of the year.  A large part of the household goods were saved, but his loss will amount to several thousand dollars more than the insurance.
The May home was one of thebest constructed dwellings in the city, and it would probably take $12,000 or more to replace it.  The household goods and clothing lost will amount to more than the insurance carried on them.  The people of Whitewright deplore the loss of this substantial home.  It was one of the landmarks of the city, having been erected about 25 years ago.
Dr. May states that he will build a modern bungalow to take the place of his old home.  He also contemplates building another bungalow, as he has a frontage of 200 feet, which gives plenty of room for two dwellings.  Work will be started soon on his new home.
